Two works from 2024 explore very different subjects through color and texture. Chicken fills the page with warm reds, oranges, and pinks set against a deep green background, giving the bird a strong, lively presence. Lonnie was actually a champion chicken judge and raised many a champion chicken himself. He will never forgive the USPS for shipping his chicken back from a fair one year and handling it poorly. The chicken did NOT die, but you should have seen the state it was in. Chickens were a daily part of life and part of Lonnie’s daily diet providing both eggs and meat. Two huge chicken houses next to his childhood home were full of chickens growing up.
Bottle is a quieter still life, centered on a green glass bottle surrounded by lightly drawn vessels and a delicate sprig stretching across the foreground. The selective use of color makes the bottle and greenery stand out from the soft gray surroundings. Back when Lonnie was younger, a bottle like this would have been kept for a further purpose, and the barn at the old home was filled with old bottles that were earmarked for some a potential future purpose.
