Completed in 2019, these pencils show Lonnie experimenting with the figures and themes of life in the country.
Mountain Man shows a frontiersman standing in the mountains with his rifle, dressed in clothing from an earlier era. Lonnie added soft color to the landscape and figure while keeping the strong pencil detail at the center of the drawing. This was a way of life for Lonnie growing up, although the clothes and powder horn are from an earlier era, Lonnie spent much of his youth hunting in the mountains of Virginia. He is also a collector of historic guns and owns several historic flint lock rifles and powder horns from an earlier era.
Front Porch is a much quieter scene: two empty chairs beneath the shade of a porch, looking out toward the trees and fence beyond. It has the familiar, peaceful feeling of a place where you might sit for a while and watch the day go by. The chairs are waiting there for you, ready to rock gently after a long day on the farm.
Both drawings show Lonnie’s interest in scenes from the past and the simple details of everyday life.
